The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to join our Research Innovations with Scientists and Engineers (RISE) team as part of our Engagement team. This position will be an integral contributor to a fast-paced and growing team of specialists supported by an exciting $60 million Penn State investment in research cyberinfrastructure. Penn State's elite researchers use our high-performance research cloud to solve real-world problems by conducting simulations, data mining, and other high-performance computing operations. With ICDS, you will have the opportunity to accelerate this groundbreaking work.

As the Senior Platform Engineer, you will be responsible for developing platform solutions to enable world-class research. These include the development of internal solutions as well as understanding and utilization of external solutions to meet research requirements and needs. This includes providing technical expertise to university constituents in research, specification, design, development, and implementation of scientific solutions, combining disciplinary knowledge and scientific data for advanced research computation optimization and workflows.

The RISE Platform Engineer will be responsible for growing and enhancing the RISE portfolio and reputation among the PSU research community through technical leadership and consulting. This job will be filled as a Research and Development Engineer level 3 or 4 depending on experience.

Our desired qualifications include: a strong research background that shows an ability to understand technical requirements, research needs and implement strategies and platforms for computational resources that can take advantage of our High-Performance Computing (HPC) Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI) and other resources to assist researchers in meeting their research needs.

Working knowledge of HPC including: architectures, regional and national resources, storage solutions and architectures, Unix/Linux operating systems, software and container solutions. Must be able to interface with faculty researchers to understand technical needs and provide guidance and leadership for solutions for solving complex research problems. Leadership experience or experience with research and/or institutions of higher education is preferred. Must have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).

Education and Experience:

This position maybe filled at a Level 3 or 4. Typically requires a Master's Degree in a technical discipline and 10+ years of related experience for a Level 4. A Ph.D. would be preferred. A Level 3 typically requires a Bachelor's Degree (Master's preferred) and 5+ years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
