Penn State's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) is seeking a systems administrator to join our team of technologists dedicated to student and faculty success. Customer service emphasis, team mentality, and an eagerness to serve in a variety of roles are essential. Must enjoy working in a dynamic, diverse and collegial environment, supporting research in the following domains:

  • High Performance Computing
  • Computer Architecture
  • Networks
  • Data Science
  • Programming Languages
  • Computer Vision
  • Security
  • Cyber Enabled Discovery
  • Systems
  • Embedded and Mobile Systems
  • Very Large-Scale Integration

The role will often require deploying nascent/emergent technologies; thus, it carries an expectation of continual learning and initiative. EECS systems administrators work directly with faculty, students, and research teams to design, deploy, and maintain research computing instrumentation and teaching resources essential to the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)scholarly work. Examples include (but are not limited to):

  • Deploying diverse Linux environments and related configuration tools, including specialized HPC resources with GPU, FPGA, and persistent memory tiers.
  • Implementing specialized IoT networks.
  • Architecting mobile application programming infrastructure for labs and courses.
  • Designing and configuring DMZ safe zones for malware research and related study.
  • Allocating virtual resources for student use (hosted and cloud).
  • Consulting with researchers on the design of technical implementations specifically targeting high value research ambitions.
  • Consulting with students and faculty on semester projects.

There is strong emphasis on problem solving and architecting solutions to technological challenges encountered by researchers and students. This dynamic work requires frequent creation of ad-hoc environments for research experiments and student projects.

The position requires proficiency in common Linux distributions, virtualization, and containers. Confidence in networking and security technologies is also required as this systems administrator will manage CSE's distribution and edge network infrastructure, to include operability from department routers to edge ports. This work will include deployment of CSE's next generation firewall in a manner consistent with Penn State's Enterprise Firewall Team and Office of Information Security best practices and strategy. In all work, identify and realize cost saving opportunities and efficiencies by leveraging enterprise technical resources and services where feasible.

This position will be filled as a level 3 or level 4 depending upon the successful candidate's qualifications. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education are required to be filled at a level 4.

This position will require successful completion of standard background checks.
