Readiness Institute - Summer Instructor posting

Overview of the Readiness Institute summer program:

The Readiness Institute at Penn State, funded by the Heinz Endowments, is a Penn State Outreach initiative that creates personalized pathways to success for every learner. We believe that community and future readiness is achieved when learners - regardless of their zip code, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ability level - are able to develop the skills, attitudes, and values needed to design and lead in matters personal, professional, and public.

The Readiness Institute at Penn State Summer Program is a six-week experience for rising high school seniors that aims to prepare every learner to become community and future ready. Participants will establish relationships and rituals, complete project sprints to solve real-world problems, and reflect, share, and plan a personalized roadmap. After the program, learners will have access to further support including mentorship, learning experiences, connections with their peers, and networking.

About this role:

We are currently looking for instructors for the Readiness Institute summer program (June 14-July 29, first week will be onboarding and training). Located at the Penn State Center Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA and working 30 hours per week (Monday-Thursday), instructors will work under the direction of the Director of the Readiness Institute to implement the Readiness Institute curriculum and provide guidance and support to students. For questions on compensation, please email Justin Aglio at justinaglio@psu.edu.

Over the course of the program, you will guide students through explorations into three major educational themes: the importance of (1) cognitive skills and competencies, the value of (2) social-emotional learning, and the primacy of (3) modern literacies (e.g., digital, media, data, design, financial, cultural). As students work to create their personalized roadmap, you will aid the students as they work to answer the following critical questions: 1. Who am I? 2. Who do I want to become? 3. How do I get there? 4. How do I continue to learn? and most important of all 5. How do I give back to my community?

Job Responsibilities:

  • Help students set goals and improve academic, social, and community readiness
  • Serve as both lead and support instructor, depending on activity
  • Understand and support the program curriculum
  • Maintain a professional attitude at all times
  • Adhere to all organizational and university site policies and procedures
  • Oversee and support students during onsite, offsite, and virtual programming
  • Proactive response to any issues or concerns involving students, families, and/or staff
  • Maintain a safe environment for all participants, in accordance with Penn State policies and CDC Covid-19 guidelines
