JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Autonomy and Emerging Technology department in the Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is seeking multiple motivated and talented Autonomy/Software Engineers focused on supporting projects related to autonomy/autonomous systems development and test and evaluation.

This department is focused on applying emergent technologies in the area of autonomous system development and evaluation and testing of unmanned vehicles. We are looking for engineers that can apply modern software practices to support the creation of autonomy software systems for direct customer programs to advance technologies in the undersea systems domain.

Responsibilities include:

  • Software/systems development activities in support of major research programs
  • Collaborate with fellow engineers, faculty, students and customers to meet project goals
  • Keep current with relevant emerging technologies and trends by attending conferences and workshops relevant to department and project goals

This job will be filled as a level 1, level 2, or level 3 depending on the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline for a level 1. Additional experience and/ or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Master's degree or PhD in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Science and Technology or related technical degree is preferred.

Additional responsibilities for a Level 2 include:

  • Investigate and evaluate all phases of software design lifecycle
  • Contribute to the development of software interface/requirements specifications

Additional responsibilities for a Level 3 include:

  • Manage small teams
  • Author technical proposals/white papers

Requirements of this position include:

  • One or more higher-level languages - C/C++, Python, R, Java, or similar
  • Inquisitive, proactive, and interested in learning new tools, techniques, and problem domains
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills;
  • Desire to work with a cross-functional team
  • Excellent organizational skills, independence, and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in an environment where problems are often not initially well-defined.

Desired experience should include one or more of the following:

  • Design of software architectures using containerization technologies (Open Container Initiative, Docker, K8s/K3s)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD concepts as they relate to DEVSECOPS software practices - specifically with GitLab and/or Atlassian tools (JIRA, Bitbucket, Confluence)
  • Automated software testing methodologies
  • Research and development experience in autonomy, autonomous systems simulation/evaluation, systems engineering processes, or naval training
  • Previous Navy systems development as related to unmanned systems
  • Active Secret/Top Secret clearance
  • Technical experience related to the development of software for autonomous or unmanned systems is highly desired.
