JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Career Studies Program (CSP) is seeking to hire a full-time education program specialist to coordinate instruction, curriculum, peer mentor support, and student activities within the program. The Career Studies Program is a U.S. Department of Education approved Comprehensive Transition Program (CTP), where individuals with intellectual disabilities can obtain a high-quality, individualized post-secondary education that leads to social and professional networks, careers, and a bright future. Career Studies is an inclusive two-year, four-semester program that includes academic and social enrichment, career exploration, and practical work experiences. The program's mission is to provide an enriching and inclusive post-secondary education and career exploration experiences that lead to independence and competitive employment. This program offers students with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to explore post-secondary education and competitive employment. This program enhances diversity and inclusion - a core piece of the Penn State value of community. The position will provide direct support for students and will work closely with parents, faculty, and staff while reporting directly to the Program Director.

Job Duties

  • Teaching three classes for seven hours a week

  • Curriculum coordination and lesson planning for BESC courses

  • Adding non-credit BESC courses to schedule

  • Assisting Career Studies students with course selection and the course registration process

  • Organizing initial Lion Tracks planning sessions for Career Studies students (goal setting and evaluations)

  • Communicating with academic faculty at the beginning and end of each semester

  • Coordinating scholarship information with DREAM Partnership and sending information to eligible families

  • Coordinating our involvement and process for exam and badge with the National Retail Foundation

  • Identifying additional curriculum options (i.e., certifications for Career Studies students)

  • Conducting and coordinating follow-up surveys each semester for peer mentors, students, faculty, and families.

  • Taking students to outside events including conferences

  • Overseeing contractor support with Keystone Human Services and/or other contractors for job development and job coaching

  • Developing contract (MOA) with Keystone Human Services or another contractor

  • Working with internal and external partners (businesses within the region) to identify job shadowing and practicum experiences for students

  • Conducting orientation sessions for students and peer mentors

  • Providing program information for open houses and information sessions

  • Participating in college fairs, as warranted

  • Communicating and coordinating with offices across campus

  • Coordinating across campus to ensure Career Studies students access to activities, (i.e., Student Activity Fee (SAF) opportunities, Career Services)

  • Coordinating new student orientation and program orientation activities for incoming Career Studies students (i.e., obtaining ID Cards, obtaining textbooks)

  • Identifying additional curriculum options (i.e., certifications for Career Studies students (i.e., CDA opportunity through HDFS)

  • Working with Career Services to develop practicum opportunities on campus and with businesses

  • Developing relationships with businesses

  • Overseeing annual and planning completer ceremonies, coordinate with Kulkarni theatre coordinator, developing the program, gathering list of courses taken, names of peer mentors and speakers from other Penn State Harrisburg offices

  • Coordinating with the program director and fiscal staff to monitor balances and financial aid

  • Interacting with Financial Aid (U Park) regarding our CTP status and related PSU requirements

  • Working with faculty to identify Career Studies Program internship opportunities for Penn State Harrisburg students

  • Interviewing peer mentors (oversee schedules) and interns - advertising and recruiting, as needed

  • Coordinating peer mentor training each semester

This position typically requires a Bachelor's degree plus 4 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance form, Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will also be required.
