If you are a current student at Penn State and seeking employment with Penn State, please login to Workday (to complete the student application process.JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:The Materials Characterization Laboratory (MCL) is a fully staffed, open access, analytical research facility at Penn State's Materials Research Institute, charged with enabling research while educating the next generation of highly qualified researchers. We are currently seeking an Engineering Support Specialist to maintain and operate mechanical testing equipment and provide training to facility users. This position will be shared half-time with the Additive Manufacturing & Design (AMD) graduate program, which provides classes and hands-on laboratory experiences for polymer and metallic 3D printing, or additive manufacturing as it is now referred to in industry. As such, this position requires a unique blend of technical and soft skills and an aptitude towards customer service and working with students and their instructors. Responsibilities include:Hands-on operation and routine maintenance/calibration of mechanical testing equipment (i.e. load frames, microindenter, dynamic mechanical analyzer, thermomechanical analyzer, digital image correlation system) and additive manufacturing systems for polymer and metal 3D printing (i.e. laser powder bed fusion systems)Analysis and interpretation of mechanical testing operations including true and engineering stress-strain curves, thermal cycling, storage and loss moduli curves for determining glass transition temperatures, and stress relaxation experimentsOversight, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical testing equipmentHandling, transport, removal, and recycling of material feedstocks for additive manufacturing, including metallic powderProcess planning and execution of an additive manufacturing build, including part layout, orientation, and support structure design and deploymentDiagnosis of system and part failures and interruptions that may arise during the additive manufacturing processTransportation and receipt of additively manufactured parts and build plates to and from appropriate internal facilities and external vendorsCompilation and delivery of results in both written and oral form to colleagues and customers in a timely and professional manner Documentation of procedures and preparation of training materialsTraining users, providing demonstrations, or participating in course deliveryResupply of tools and consumablesMaintaining a safe work environmentRequired skills and experience include:Associate or Bachelors degree in an engineering centered program - Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology preferredHands on experience with mechanical testing equipment and 3D printing systemsKnowledge of theoretical basis for mechanical testing concepts including stress-strain curve, Youngs modulus, von Mises theory, indentation hardness, strain hardening, differences between ductile and brittle fracture mechanicsFamiliarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software in support of part and product designA conscientious mindset, attention to detail, excellent communication skills, ability to work autonomously and as a team member, and a commitment to customer service as a top priority This job will be filled at a level 1 or level 2 depending upon the successful candidates education and experience. Typically requires an Associate degree or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education competencies are required for higher level jobs.This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with good possibility of re-funding.Preferred skills and experience (training will be provided as necessary):Experience with SEM/EBSD, sample prep, optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniquesExperience with build preparation and build planning software for 3D printingHands-on experience operating a laser powder bed fusion system for metal 3D printingOne to two years of experience with equipment maintenance and servicing Staffed by >20 interdisciplinary scientists and engineers, MCL is a group of researchers that are passionate about education and collaborative problem solving. Our laboratories occupy >15,000 ft2 within the Millennium Science Complex (MSC), and we support >900 users from >35 Penn State departments, and >90 external organizations (industry, government labs, and other academic institutions) annually. Current capabilities include electron & ion microscopy, molecular spectroscopy, electron & ion spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, mechanical testing, surface metrology, thermal analysis, particle analysis, electrical characterization, and extensive sample processing resources. The AMD graduate program offers online and resident training to over 100 industry practitioners and resident students. Core courses include 3D printing processes, design, materials, and a hands-on laboratory that is conducted in the Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D) in collaboration with MCL and the Center for Quantitative Imaging (CQI). CIMP-3D laboratories occupy > 10,000 ft2 within Building 230 in Innovation Park and is jointly managed by staff and faculty in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) and Penn State. The individual will need to undergo a screening process prior to being granted access to CIMP-3D. Likewise, training and respirator certification will be required prior to using any of the equipment in CIMP-3D.
