Description/Position Purpose Shippensburg University is currently
searching for a Dean of Students. The Dean of Students ( DOS )
provides vision and oversight for a vibrant Dean of Students Office
and other areas that promote student engagement. Serving as the
institution's primary student advocate, the DOS oversees the
University's response to student care and well-being, student
conduct and community standards, and other support services.
Additionally, the DOS serves as a liaison and advocate for students
of concern through the development of student-centered services,
policies, and resources, provides guidance in the development of
policies and practices that govern student events, demonstrations,
protests and other student events. The DOS participates in the
development and facilitation of programming and educational
initiatives, identifies systemic gaps in services and barriers to
student success, and works collaboratively to develop strategies to
address issues. The Dean of Students further plays a vital role in
addressing the concerns of students, demonstrating a commitment to
social justice and student advocacy. This position serves to
provide solutions to barriers that students may face within the
system of higher education and encourages students to realize their
academic potential. This position fosters the creation and
maintenance of a multicultural and diverse institution, creating
collaborative partnerships among diverse students and student
organizations. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
--- Responsible for administrative and programmatic oversight and
coordination of the following units, departments, and offices:
Student Conduct; Title IV Investigations and adjudication for
students; Wellness Center which includes Recreation, Counseling and
Health Center; Commuter Students; Drug and Alcohol Services; and
--- Provides supervision for professional Staff members, support
staff members, graduate students and undergraduate student
employees including informal and formal evaluation processes.
--- Oversees and directs student conduct and community standards
and assures that all policies, procedures and prevention efforts
are consistent with best practices and are developmental in
--- Administer with the Title IX Coordinator the investigation and
adjudication of Title IX incidents involving students.
--- Assists in creating campus-wide policies, programs and services
that support student success and assures consistent policy
implementation across campus locations.
--- Support the mission of the University and the Division through
development of departmental strategic plans that support student
learning and operation outcomes.
--- Assure processes are in place to address student concerns and
complaints as they relate to non-academic issues and that these
concerns are addressed in a timely manner.
--- Serves on Student Affairs Leadership Team and fills in for AVP
when absent from campus.
--- Coordinate a campus wide Wellness program for students, faculty
--- Confer with, counsel and advise students, faculty, staff and
parents regarding activities, programs, and services available.
--- Lead and direct development and implementation of policies,
procedures, and programs to provide efficient and effective
services that support the University mission, and particularly the
ongoing development of the University's mind-body-spirit wellness
--- Provide timely and concise data collection and reports as
needed and ensure that student information is managed appropriately
in student database.
--- Coordinate the university's comprehensive response to
emergencies. Coordinate relationships between university police and
--- Respond to emergency/crisis situations as needed, including
coordination of communication with healthcare providers and
families. Manages the training and scheduling for the on-call
process working with the Director for Housing & Residence Life
including training of staff.
--- Serve as a policy enforcement officer, representing the
Division at various University functions and events as determined
by the Vice President or AVP .
--- In consultation with the Provost and Vice President for
Academic and Chief Student Affairs Officer, coordinate the
institution's comprehensive response to student emergencies, crisis
intervention, and death notices and provide follow-up. Provide
consultation and serve as a referral resource for faculty, staff,
students, parents and families.
--- Identifies and collaborates to develop appropriate outreach and
services for vulnerable student populations including, but not
limited to, students who are homeless, food insecure or from the
foster care system.
--- Interact with community residents, students, officials, and
police to enhance cooperation in matters of mutual interest in the
--- Participates in university wide events, including residence
hall openings, Orientation, Welcome Week, Family Weekend,
Homecoming, general student events, and others as appropriate.
--- Serves as the Chair of the Ship Cares Team and follows up on
all student issues.

Qualifications Qualified candidates will have a Master's Degree in
higher education, student personnel services, student development
or a related field. A minimum of eight years of experience in
higher education which includes five years of progressive
experience in student program development is also required.
Successful supervisory experience, a demonstrated commitment to the
development and offering of programming to support co-curricular
learning; skill in creating programs to meet the needs of on- and
off-campus students; strong planning and problem solving skills;
sensitivity and knowledge of diversity and inclusion; and excellent
written and oral presentation skills are also required. Successful
performance in an on-campus interview is required. Preferred
